How eloquent! Through each of you three writers I am given a glimpse into the soul of Winter Park. This edition of WPV grants the reader an almost Dickensian view of our city. Audible in these missives are the voices of the “Ghosts” of WP past and WP present, as well as that of the specter of a dismal WP future if we do not wake up and play close attention to what matters most. Jerry Donnelly (a past commissioner) tells it exactly like it is and exposes the many glaring fault lines in the Leary narrative of his overblown “heroics” in terms of his service on the commission. I would also recommend that everyone go back and read the corrected and absolutely un-retracted WP Observer article “Cashing In On Development,” which explores issues surrounding Commissioner Leary. Make no mistake. Leary’s actions and voting record strongly suggest that he sees a Winter Park ripe for commercial exploitation. He explicitly promises us more of exactly the same. Mackinnon sees a jewel which warrants careful stewardship. We must choose wisely.

I completely disagree with the “anti density” folks who cry that new development is destroying Winter Park. The two are not mutually exclusive. As long as the downtown business district and Central Park are preserved in their current form, and maintained well, then Winter Park will always be Winter Park. It will retain the charm and character that its’ residents and visitors love and appreciate. Let’s not forget that we are in the middle of a fast growing metropolitan area, only three miles from downtown Orlando. WP is no longer a small town far removed from urban congestion. There is absolutely nothing wrong with new developments such as the Heritage office building on Denning, the Paseos apartments on Denning….or any of the other planned larger projects along Fairbanks, 17-92, and Lee Road. These new projects will benefit our tax base. Yes, traffic is a byproduct of new development, but that goes with the territory. If any residents don’t care for the direction they feel the City is headed in, there are lots and lots of small towns across America that will welcome them.

Once I saw Judge Perry’s comments I know who I had to vote for. Please, do our town a favor and vote for MacKinnon if you have been on the fence. Don’t let Pete Weldon’s hot air influence you. Hot air is being polite. Leary is worried about this race and it shows through Weldon’s rantings.Vote MacKinnon!

Winter Park has been my hometown since 1952. The village charm of that time is long past but not forgotten. For me, we are at a true tipping point. We either take responsibility and demand reasonable restrictions on development and redevelopment or we can stand silently by and allow the continuing loss of the uniqueness which has made Winter Park such a wonderful town! Cynthia MacKinnon will be a mayor with no other agenda than promoting the best interest of Winter Park.

Kudos to Beth and Jeff for at least having the conviction of thought to not use a pseudonym. Just as important, even if one doesn’t like or agree with Pete Weldon, he also does not use a pseudonym.
